Designated Service Canada offices All biometrics appointments in Canada are cancelled until further notice. Even though a small number of Service Canada offices may be open with limited services, biometrics collection services are still currently unavailable. Due to COVID-1 anyone in Canada applying for temporary residence is exempt from giving biometrics. All Passport or Service Canada in person offices are still closed to public.

Under current guidelines, arriving to Canada to work in the country is deemed essential travel.


Your Canada biometrics are requested AFTER submitting your IEC visa work permit application. They are not required to be submitted with your application profile. However, over the next two years, Canada will be expanding its biometric program in stages.


Or, for applicants in Canada, you can now submit your biometrics by appointment only at any designated Service Canada Centre. After submitting your work permit application, you’ll soon receive a request to submit biometrics. From the date you receive the request for biometrics, you have days to complete them and upload your receipt. This is great news for those applying for permanent residency who are in Canada with temporary status.


Previously these individuals had to leave Canada to have their biometrics done. Similarly, those whose applications are being processed within Canada can give their biometrics. A traveller’s biometrics are also used when they enter Canada to confirm his or her identity. Biometrics are used at both the application and entry into Canada phases.


Canada currently collects biometrics from in- Canada refugee claimants and overseas refugee resettlement applicants, as well as individuals ordered removed from Canada and applying for authorisation to return, and individuals from any one of specific countries applying for a temporary resident visa, work permit, or study permit. Foreign national will be requested to submit their biometrics at any of the designated Service Canada locations across the country.

With these Proposed Regulations, Canada wishes to fall into step with its partners and improve its identity verification capacity through the increased use of biometrics. Why does the Government of Canada require applicants to submit biometrics ? Depending on your nationality, you may already need to give biometrics. This really depends on the type of application.


For example, many of the work permits I submit for clients are approved within around week of them giving biometrics, but most of these are expedited through the Global Talent Stream.
